Artwork Description
The song I chose is actually a chant from Ram Dass, called ‘Rama Rama’. Rama is the name of Lord Rama, which means the Perfect and Supreme One of Eternal Bliss, who dwells in everyone of us. The chant is simply a repetition of the mantra ‘Rama’ throughout. Every time I listen to it, it has a numinous effect on me that is beyond words.
Kabir, a 15th century Indian saint wrote:
" .... What is God?
He is the breath inside the breath. "
For me, it is the moment when the mind is silent and in complete stillness, that is when we touch the sublime. For the artwork, I have chosen to use only the rim of the record; the beginning soundless part before the song starts. This rim with the hollow centre forms a neck piece. Besides, the circle is a symbol for emptiness in the Buddhist zen tradition. Being a jeweller, I am setting a grey diamond in it to leave my mark. Diamond is the hardest material on earth and I believe it will endure the way music does.
